In the corner of a sunlit workshop in Portland, Oregon, Elena Vasquez carefully runs her hand along the curved arm of what will become her signature Sculpted Lounge Chair. Twenty-three years of woodworking experience have taught her that furniture isn't just about function—it's about creating pieces that speak to the soul.
Elena's path to becoming one of the most sought-after furniture makers in the Pacific Northwest wasn't traditional. Originally trained as an architect, she spent her early career designing buildings that would outlast her lifetime. But it was the intimate scale of furniture—pieces that people would touch, sit on, and live with daily—that ultimately captured her imagination.
"I remember the exact moment I knew I had to make furniture," Elena recalls, pausing her work to look out at the Douglas firs that surround her studio. "I was sketching furniture layouts for a residential project when I realized I was more excited about the chair I was drawing than the room it would sit in. That night, I enrolled in my first woodworking class."
The Sculpted Lounge Chair, which has become Elena's signature piece and graces the homes of design enthusiasts worldwide, originated from an unlikely source: a piece of driftwood Elena found on Oregon's coastline during a particularly difficult period in her early career.
"I was struggling with a commission that just wasn't coming together," she explains, running her fingers along the chair's distinctive flowing armrest. "I took a weekend break and found myself at Cannon Beach. There was this piece of driftwood—smooth from years of ocean waves—and its curves were so perfect, so organic. I knew immediately that I wanted to capture that feeling in a chair."
What sets Elena's work apart is her approach to what she calls "emotional ergonomics"— the idea that truly great furniture must satisfy not just the body, but the mind and spirit as well.
"Anyone can make a chair that's comfortable to sit in," Elena says, demonstrating the perfect angle of the chair's backrest. "But I want to create pieces that make you feel something when you simply look at them. The Sculpted Lounge Chair should feel like a gentle embrace, even before you sit down."
Creating each Sculpted Lounge Chair is a 6-8 week process that combines traditional woodworking techniques with Elena's own innovations. The process begins with selecting the perfect walnut or cherry wood, chosen not just for its grain pattern but for what Elena calls its "personality."
Elena personally selects each piece of wood, looking for boards that will provide the dramatic flowing grain that makes each chair unique. "I can spend hours at the lumber yard," she laughs. "My suppliers think I'm crazy, but I know the right piece when I see it."
The chair's distinctive curves are created through a combination of steam bending and hand carving. Elena has developed her own technique for achieving the flowing transitions between the seat, back, and arms that make the chair appear to have been shaped by wind and water rather than human hands.
What takes the most time isn't the major shaping, but the countless small details that elevate the chair from furniture to art. Elena hand-sands each curve with progressively finer grits, ensuring that every surface feels perfect to the touch.
The finishing process uses a technique Elena developed herself—seven thin coats of a custom oil blend that protects the wood while maintaining its natural feel. "You should be able to feel the wood, not the finish," she insists.
Elena's workshop is a fascinating blend of high-tech precision and old-world charm. While she uses modern tools for efficiency, the most important work is still done by hand.
"My grandfather's hand planes are still my most valuable tools," she says, showing off a collection of pristine vintage tools inherited from her Mexican grandfather, who was a carpenter in Guadalajara. "There's something about the connection between hand, tool, and wood that you just can't replicate with machines."
For Elena, creating beautiful furniture means being responsible about where materials come from. She works exclusively with sustainably harvested wood from Pacific Northwest forests, and has established relationships with local sawmills that share her commitment to responsible forestry.
"Every tree that becomes one of my chairs lived for decades, sometimes centuries," she reflects. "I feel a responsibility to honor that life by creating something that will last just as long and bring joy to the families who live with it."
With a waiting list that stretches nearly two years, Elena's chairs have become highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts. But she's careful not to let market demand compromise her artistic vision.
"I could easily make twice as many chairs if I changed my process, but that would mean compromising on the details that make each piece special," she explains. "I'd rather make fewer chairs that I'm truly proud of than mass-produce something that's just 'good enough.'"
Elena is currently working on a companion piece to the Sculpted Lounge Chair—a coffee table that captures the same flowing aesthetic while introducing new technical challenges. She's also planning her first solo exhibition for next spring, which will showcase not just finished pieces but the process behind them.
"Furniture making chose me as much as I chose it," Elena concludes, as afternoon light filters through her workshop windows. "Every day I get to work with my hands, create something beautiful, and know that it will be part of someone's daily life for generations. That's not just a job—that's a privilege."
